Origins[]

The Ningyo is a creature with origins in Japanese mythology, legend and folklore.

Appearance[]

Most commonly, Ningyo are known to resemble fish with humanoid or primate faces.

Though, it is not uncommon to see a Ningyo that more closely resembles simply a Japanese version of merfolk (mermaid or merman); that is, having the upper body of a human or humanoid, and the lower body of a fish.

These are not mythical inconsistencies or discrepancies. Both versions of Ningyo exist. This is likely due to genetic variation, from one generation to the next.

Regardless, it is known far and wide that Ningyo have glistening scales, and a melodious flute-like voice.
