Origins

The Nycticorax is a creature with origins in the mythology, legend and folklore of Medieval Europe. Its name derives from the Greek "nyx"/"nykt" ("night") and korax ("raven").

In particular, its nature gave rise to early Christian allegory, in which it was compared unfavorably to the Jewish people.

Appearance

The name Nycticorax undeniably suggests that the creature belongs to the raven family of birds, though, on a number of occasions, the bird has been described to at least bear some resemblance to an owl.

More confusingly, there is a mundane classification of bird called the Nycticorax, which is a breed of heron.

Behavior

Unsurprisingly, the nycticorax is nocturnal in nature. It is also said to be a natural enemy to the Pelican, whose nest the bird will actively seek out to kill the babies.

Abilities

Though no abilities are outright stated, some believe that the Nycticorax is able to shapeshift between other nocturnal bird species, most notably the owl and the nycticorax species of crane.
