The Rugaru is a creature with origins in North American mythology, legend and folklore, especially that of Louisiana and among various Native American tribes.
Many believe that the name is a corruption of the French term "loup garoux" ("wolf man"), while others believe that the term may be derived from the French phrase "roux garoux" ("red man"). In the latter case, it may have a connection to Native American people, or even multiracial mulatto people (Black people whose ancestry is also visibly mixed with another race, especially half-Black, half-White).
